Jackie Chan Eye Surgery

Hong Kong actor, action choreographer, comedian, director, producer and martial artist Jackie Chan (real name: Chan Kong-sang) is rumored to have had eye surgery before he rose to fame as a martial arts hero.
The truth is that Jackie had actually an eyelid surgery, known as an "eyelid tuck". This is a very popular surgery among Asians, where the eyelids are given an extra forced fold to appear more open and "Western."

It is estimated that Jackie Chan, 59, had eyelid surgery back in 1976, knowing that being a kung fu legend meant looking Asian, but not that Asian.

The question is: "What plastic surgeon experts beleive about Jackie Chan's eye surgery?"

Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon and Rhinoplasty Specialist in Beverly Hills, California, Paul S. Nassif, was quoted as saying: "It is possible that Jackie Chan had surgery.  In his more recent photos it appears that his upper eyelids are more visible, if he did have surgery it was a conservative procedure that still retains his ethnicity."

Dr. Jennifer Walden revealed to Make Me Heal: "If the before picture is actually confirmed as a young Jackie Chan, which I think it is given his jaw asymmetry in both the before and after shots, then he clearly has had a blepharoplasty (eyelid lift)."

"If the surgery was indeed done in the 70s it is possible that his surgeon was trying to create a more Westernized look for the young Jackie Chan who would soon find fame in the U.S.  Today, more subtle methods of double eyelid surgery are employed in order to preserve the ethnicity of the naturally beautiful Asian eyelid," Dr. Walden continued.

Dr. Walden also explained how double eyelid surgery is performed: "The difference between Asian and Caucasian eyelids is in the position of the eyelid fold; Asians who do have a crease above their eye have very different looking eyelids than Caucasians. The Asian eyelid typically starts at the crease very close to the eyelashes. As the crease gets further away from the nose, it gets larger and larger until the midpoint of the pupil, at which point the fold runs parallel to the eyelash origin."

"In Asians who request a certain type of blepharoplasty called double eyelid surgery, not only is skin trimmed from the upper lids, but detailed work is done to create a more defined palpebral crease.  The creation of this crease gives the appearance of an upper lid sulcus, or crevice, that gives contour to the upper lid," Dr. Walden added.

Conclusion: It is clear that Jackie Chan's decision to have a double eyelid surgery in his youth helped him to become an international success without looking weird.
